Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) in Peel Region

  • 50% of males and 70% of females who have Chlamydia don't even know it. Source
  • STIs have become a serious health risk to the youth of Peel, with Chlamydia and Gonorrhea rates highest in the 15 to 24 age range.
  • The Communicable Disease 1995-2004 report states that the incidence of Chlamydia has increased by 73% between 1996 and 2004. It's also the most common STI seen in Peel, followed closely by Gonorrhea.
  • The incidence of syphilis has increased considerably since 2002. Twenty new cases were reported in Peel in 2004 compared to 1-2 cases per year reported from 1999 to 2002. Source

HIV in Peel and Ontario

  • As of December 2004, there were 7,651 cases of AIDS among males and females in Ontario.
  • In 2004, there were 4.4 new cases of HIV for every 100,000 people living in Peel.
  • In Peel, men and women aged 30 - 39 have the highest incidence rate of HIV. The second highest rate is among the 20 - 29 year olds.
  • Between 1995 and 2004, there were 102 cases of AIDS and 324 HIV positives among males and females in Peel.

HIV and Women

  • Sexually active women aged 15 - 24 are at a particular risk of sexually transmitted infections (including AIDS) because the cells of their cervix are still maturing and are therefore more vulnerable to change.
  • In Canada, most women who test HIV positive are adolescents and young adults. In 2003, 42.5% of positive HIV test reports among women aged 15 to 29 years.
  • Women represent an increasing proportion of reported HIV cases in Canada. In fact, by December 2004, women accounted for 25% of positive HIV test reports.
  • Globally, young women and girls are 2.5 times more likely to be HIV-infected than their male counterparts.
  • Every woman who is pregnant or who is anticipating a pregnancy should be tested for HIV.
  • Women are often a great source of strength and support for their families and communities. This may be jeopardized if they contract HIV.
  • 10 to 50 percent of women globally report physical abuse that includes sexual violence at least once in their lives. Women are vulnerable to HIV due to social and economic inequalities, discrimination, lack of power negotiating safer sex and sexual violence.
