Unexpected vaginal bleeding

I was having sex with my boyfriend when blood started streaming out of my vagina.

It looked like period blood, but I’m not expecting my period until next week.

I was having sex with my boyfriend when blood started streaming out of my vagina.

What could this mean?

Based on what you’ve told us, there are a few possible explanations:

  1. The bleeding might have been caused by the intercourse itself. If your vagina wasn’t well lubricated (felt dry) during intercourse, your vaginal lining might have become irritated, causing bleeding.
  1. If you aren’t using hormonal birth control, such as the Pill, your period might have just started earlier than expected.
  1. If you take the Pill, your period might have started earlier because you missed one or more pills in a row.
  1. You might have a sexually transmitted infection (STI) like chlamydia or gonorrhea.

Unexplained vaginal bleeding can be caused by different things, so it’s important see a doctor for an examination and vaginal swab or urine test. Only a doctor can confirm what caused your irregular bleeding and how to treat it.

Please book an appointment with your family doctor or a Peel Public Health, Healthy Sexuality Clinic for an examination.
