Unexpected vaginal bleeding
I was having sex with my boyfriend when blood started streaming out of my vagina.
It looked like period blood, but I’m not expecting my period until next week.
I was having sex with my boyfriend when blood started streaming out of my vagina.
What could this mean?
Based on what you’ve told us, there are a few possible explanations:
- The bleeding might have been caused by the intercourse itself. If your vagina wasn’t well lubricated (felt dry) during intercourse, your vaginal lining might have become irritated, causing bleeding.
- If you aren’t using hormonal birth control, such as the Pill, your period might have just started earlier than expected.
- If you take the Pill, your period might have started earlier because you missed one or more pills in a row.
Unexplained vaginal bleeding can be caused by different things, so it’s important see a doctor for an examination and vaginal swab or urine test. Only a doctor can confirm what caused your irregular bleeding and how to treat it.
Please book an appointment with your family doctor or a Peel Public Health, Healthy Sexuality Clinic for an examination.
