Help for erectile dysfunction (ED)

Do your Mississauga clinics deal with erectile dysfunction issues?

My family doctor ignored the issue last time I spoke to him about it (which was difficult enough to do).

It's becoming frustrating and I’d like to find someone who specializes in this kind of problem.

Are there any recommendations you can make?

Erectile dysfunction (ED) — also known as impotence — is a condition where a man consistently has difficulty getting or keeping an erection that’s firm enough for sexual intercourse.

Close to 3 million men in Canada have ED.

ED can have both physical and psychological causes:

  • Physical ED can be caused by a hormone imbalance or possible damage to the nerves or blood vessels in the penis.
  • Psychological ED can be caused by stress, anger, relationship issues or other emotional concerns.

Psychological ED is usually treated through counselling or exercise, while physical ED is usually treated using medications, implants or hormonal therapies.

You can help prevent ED by:

  • Reducing your levels of stress.
  • Making healthy food choices.
  • Reducing your alcohol and tobacco use.

If you’re experiencing ED it’s important to see a doctor for a proper diagnosis and testing.

Our Peel Public Health Healthy Sexuality Clinics don’t offer testing or treatment for ED; however, your family doctor can refer you to a urologist (a doctor who specializes in the male and female urinary tract and the male reproductive system). If your family doctor is ignoring the issue or isn’t taking your concerns seriously, try making an appointment with another physician or visit a nearby walk-in clinic.

A number of clinics in the GTA specialize in ED and other sexuality related issues for men. An Internet search can help you find an appropriate clinic near you.
