Pregnancy FAQs
Abortions
I’m 17 years old. My period is 4 days late, but I have these weird cramps like I’m getting my period. I’m scared I might be pregnant. Does the Peel Region Sexual Health Clinic in Bramalea do abortions? Or is there another way I can get rid of an unwanted pregnancy? I know that’s awful and seems wrong, but it’s what I have to do. I mean people make mistakes then they learn from them, right? Thanks…
Thanks you for your question.
There are a few reasons why your period might be late.
One reason is that your period isn’t regular to begin with. Few women have a “perfect” 28 day menstrual cycle. It can be perfectly normal for a woman to have periods that start a few days to a week later than expected.
A second reason is stress, which can also make your period late. Exams, a stressful job, fights with a partner or friend and being physically sick can make your period late. It’s different for every woman.
Of course, a missed period is an early sign of pregnancy. The only way to know for sure is to take a pregnancy test. You can buy a pregnancy test at any pharmacy or get a free, confidential pregnancy test and options counselling at any of our Peel Healthy Sexuality Clinics. We’ll do the pregnancy test at any one of our clinics then discuss next steps.
In our options counselling we’ll talk about keeping a pregnancy, choosing adoption or having an abortion. Peel Healthy Sexuality Clinics don’t do abortions, but we respect a woman’s right to choose and will give you information on where to get an abortion and what to expect. We’ll also give you a referral that you can take to any abortion clinic you choose. (Women in Ontario don’t need a referral from a doctor to visit an abortion clinic. They can call and book an appointment themselves).
There’s one abortion clinic in Mississauga and several in Toronto. Clinics often do abortions for free, but you must bring your OHIP card.
Please visit our 150 Central Park Drive Clinic in Bramalea (or any of our other locations) for a free pregnancy test and counselling. We also offer low-cost birth control options (including free condoms) if you’re interested.
